Theodor Seuss Geisel was a famous American writer and cartoonist best known for his classic children's books under the pen name Dr. Seuss, including The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. His books have become staples for many children and their parents. Seuss' trademark was his rhyming text and outlandish creatures. He also wrote under the pen name Theo. LeSieg. He wrote and illustrated 44 children's books. Even at this early stage, Geisel had started using the pen name "Dr. Seuss", as well as his own name. His first work signed as "Dr. Seuss" appeared six months into his work for Judge (a humor magazine). Seuss was his mother's maiden name. Being an immigrant from Germany, she would have pronounced it more or less as "zoice", the standard pronunciation in German (according to Censuses, his mother was born in Massachusetts, and it was her parents who were the immigrants). |
